Last entry for Top Contest

So here is my last entry for Made By Rae Spring Top Sewalong (phew, what a name !).  I made it from two frumpy and stained men's shirts and a bit of bias tape.  I like fitted and mismatched things with a feminine touch (the bow).  I really like it and feel very cute in it !

What do you think ? Qu'en pensez-vous ?

Sorry I cut my head from the pic but I have tried Natacha's pin curls method and my hair is not dried yet...  Plus, the contest requires square pics.  Here is a more side view:

I love the flouncy-ish sleeves and the contrast detail of the bias tape and the little bow.  Even if I don't win the contest, I think I am a winner with this one !

OK, now I am going to go into SERIOUS sewing withdrawal becaue I HAVE TO grade exams and projetcs for my students...   And I am off to Toronto for the Creativ Festival this Friday and Saturday to meet my idol: Linda McPhee !  I will wear my patchy dress and plastic bag raincoat, made using her patterns !!!  Let's see what she says...

Peace

My top made the mosaic !

I was checking out Made By Rae's Spring Top Sewalong 2012 and I found out one of my tops (the sixties inspired one) made it on the mosaic out of 278 entries (8 down, 5 across) !!!  Woot woot !  A great honor for me !  I have one day left to enter my last entry (we are allowed only four) so better make it a GOOD one !!!

I'll see if I can make the deadline...

I am also working on pics from the fashion show.  Coming soon...

The countdown has started...

For those who have followed me from the beginning, you know that I am participating in a fashion show (tomorrow and Friday !!!).  Well, we just had our dress rehearsal and it is going to be AWESOME !!!  My clothes look SO NICE and the kids are so happy to model them !  I am beyond happy with the whole thing even if it has taken over my life for a month !!!  Yes, I will be happy when it is over and I can go back to having a bit of normalcy in my life but I will be ready to start again !!!  A friend of mine is going to film the whole thing and, if I figure out how, I will post some excerpts on the blog.

OK, so I still have to find some bling to go with my ball gown.... crunch time...

Peace

Sixties top - Fashion show version 2

OK, so as my mom always says: " Only crazy people don't change their minds !".  So, I am not crazy !!!  Cause I changed my mind...  Remember this top that I wanted to use in the fashion show ?  Well, it turns out that with my funky stripey leggings, it looks like a clown costume or a character from Doctor Seuss !!!  So, I needed to make something else.  Also, my yellow top might have been too small for the model.

So I took my scraps from the leggings and thought about a fun, appliqued t-shirt.  Of  course, I am obsessed with the sixties so I looked on the net for patterns.  With a bit of double-sided interfacing, I came up with this:

I quite like the placement and colours of the shapes.
So here is what my shirt looks like:
Voici mon haut:

Sorry, no face today.  Too much of a mess...  I love the squarish collar and the pointy sides.  I even entered it into the Made-By-Rae Spring Top Sewalong 2012.  You can even vote for me if it is chosen in the shortlist.  I'll keep you posted.

I'm embellishing my ball gown.  I'll post it as soon as it is done.

Fashion show Franken-top

So here it is !  After a few mishaps and unpicking (...), I give you: my fashion show Franken-top:

Made from some leftover t-shirts and this XXXL shirt:

I really liked the feminine print and I think this should be interesting with my leggings (which I have not posted yet...).

So once again, I LOVE me some pockets and nothing is better than a tunic - flattering and fits any shape.

I'll be back soon !!!  Je reviens bientôt !!!

Peace

Franken-top

Hey folks !

So the week-end is finally here and I am hard at work for the fashion show - last sprint !!!
Dernier sprint !!!

I still need a top to wear with my raincoat and leggings and I want to make it interesting but a bit more plain because the outfit is already very colourful.  So I started to make a mock-up of the top I wanted.  I want a strecthy bodice (empire waist) and a flowy bottom (shirt).  The final product will be in more mute tones but since I had A LOT of red t-shirts (ball gown), I thought I would use it.  I also found a stained men's shirt in my stash.  It does not go very well together but it was a mock-up so I did not care.

Here is the result:
Voici le résultat:

Don't mind my disshevelled look: putting on and taking off shirts to test and adjust makes for a very messy hairdo...

So I used many different textures and colours.  It is really comfortable and with the nice weather FINALLY coming upon us, this litlle top should come in handy.  I also am a sucker for pockets !!!

So I am quite pleased with the pattern I drafted (3rd try...) and I shall make the final fashion show top today.  I will hence post more this week-end.

Talk to you later !  On se parle plus tard !

Peace !

A Long day and A Short NIght...

Hey folks,

Still working like a madwoman on my fashion show pieces.  Yesterday, I tackled the BIG ONE:  The prom dress.  Not that I have never made a dress but never WITH MY OWN PATTERN...  Yikes !  I am fairly new in terms of drafting patterns and I thought that making clothes from existing patterns was kind of hypocritical to be thought of as a "designer"....  Maybe it is me but I am a purist.  I wanted to have designed ALL my clothes, either inspiration from existing pieces (who can actually think they are not inspired by someone else...) or actually drafting my own patterns.  That being said, in my book (and my life) NEW = MISTAKES... Usually, I am fairly philosophical about mistakes (yes, yes, mistakes help you grow - at least, that is what I tell my students ;)...  But when TIME is of the essence, it is less easy to take...  So I try to take notes of the mistakes I make to NOT make them again, when (IF) I make this pattern again...  Here are some of them:

- When you line a gown bodice with no straps, cut the lining piece shorter because the finishing inside drops the sewing line towards the lining.
Do you see the joining line towards the inside ?

- Interfacing stretchy material REMOVES the stretchiness... ugh...  rookie mistake...
- Cutting 3 m of tulle requires TWO people !
- Couper 3 m de tulle prend DEUX personnes !
- T-shirt fabric is HEAVY !!!  Cut the skirt panels with less fabric on top (than I did)

- Do NOT have a joining seam close to the top (into the ruffles) - it does NOT ruffle well !

- A gathering foot  does not work on tulle...
- Use BASTING STITCHES as much as possible before stabilizing your seams

So here are some pictures of the process (taken well into the night...)
Photos du processus (prises dans la nuit...):

Here is the bodice: (corsage)

Lining of the bodice.  I used a decorative stitch to make a nice touch:

As I don't have a poofy-enough crinoline, I decided to make one.  BUT, I don't have that much time on my hands.  I DID buy some stiff cotton (a sheet) but I had this cool used skirt and thought it looked perfect for a fast-made (I THOUGHT) crinoline.

So I proceeded to cut up MANY, MANY, MANY meters of tulle:

You can see, I am wearing my bodice.  And all my sewing paraphernalia on the table...

So after many hours, some curse words and, fortunately, no needle-breakage or thread-snapping, here is what my WIP crinoline looks like: (not quite finished yet)

A little tip to gather LENGTHS of fabric:  Find the 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4  of your piece and sew a red thread at those points so you can identify them quickly: (not my best work in picture taking but I hope you get the point):

Also, to gather, use a butcher string and a wide and long zig zag over top.  It will be a cinch to gather afterwards.

So, not done YET, but coming along nicely.  Here it is:

I think it looks OK.  Of course, the lining is longer than the bodice...

The boning is now on the princess seams on the front (as per Angela Johnson's dress description - Thank you Angela !).  The hem is not done yet and it will be the LAST thing to be made.  I probably will serge the edge and hem it by hand to sculpt it (although I kind of like the little points).  I plan on letting the petticoat tulle stitck out a bit for a pop of colour.  NOW, I feel that the bodice is REALLY plain and not like me...  I was thinking of embellishing it with some freehand sewing and rhinestones BUT I have NEVER (of course) freehand sewed before...  and I don't consider myself a graphic artist... Soooo, I am still thinking of something.  I thought of sequins (don't mind sewing by hand) but I don't know how to arrange them... Any thoughts ?...  Here is the "hem" right now...

Also, I FINALLY broke open my, now, new best friend:  My Oliso iron.  It is a SMART iron with LEGS !!!  If you don't know about this little gem, here is what it looks like :

It is A-MA-ZING !  You leave it horizontally (so no accidental tipping) and it gets on little legs.  When you so much as gently touch the handle, the legs go back in !  I am in LOVE !!! (This is not a paid endorsement).

OK, so I think I bored you enough for now.  I will TRY to finish my dress this week-end but I might not...  Yikes !
Yikes !

Here is what is left for the fashion show:

- Finishing the prom dress (attaching the bodice (gulp), finishing the crinoline (with plastic boning I think), hem, embellishing (maybe...), making a fascinator)
- Making the top for the raincoat/leggings piece, finishing hem of the raincoat
- Making a small hat for the girl (maybe)
- Making my own dress (absolutely)
- Faire ma propre robe (absolument)

And of course, my LARGE pile of grading.  Ugh...
Et évidemment, mon ÉNORME pile de correction...  Agh...

Peace

A Digestive Tract or "What-to-do-with-lonely-socks"...

Do you think it is a cryptic title ?  Well, if you knew me well, you'd know that I will go to many lengths to teach my students.  I really like things to manipulate and since I teach the human body, I need some cheap original material.  Why not use my creativity and craftiness to come up with something unique.  And why not use something that we ALL have and do not know what to do with ?  Lonely socks !!!  We all have a sock-eating washer, no ?  Well, I wanted to show my students how LONG our guts were inside so I made a LIFE-SIZE digestive tract, from the esophagus to the colon.  Of course, our guts are all convoluted inside so I sewed an elastic in the middle of the tube to make it curl up.  I looked up the dimensions of every organ and made it the same with the socks.  I even changed the colours for the different organs.  I put the entire thing in a belly-shaped zippered pouch:

It starts with the black esophagus, followed by the dark grey stomach...

And then you can see a white duodenum, a pale grey jejunum and a darker ileum.  The colon is wider and pale grey.  And I even included the appendix.

Can you see they are all men's socks (certainly not mine !)

My students really got a kick out of this (even if they thought I was really crazy to have made this... although I had started KNITTING it at first.  Much faster sewing it !).

I have too many zany ideas - lots more where that one came from !

Peace

Claudia

First outfit DONE !!!

Hey guys,

Still working on my fashion show designs.  My first outfit is officially complete !  Yay !!!
Youpi !

I already had my tie-skirt and my little hat but I needed a cute top.  I started wanting a solid bright red top but then I thought that was not me.  I like bold and kind of mismatched fabrics.  So I bought a used men's XXL short sleeved shirt and here is what it looked like:

I used one of my previous patterns that I really like but I made from a stretchy top previously.

I put my refashioned top on the inside out men's shirt:

Then, I cut the pieces, sewed down the button plackets and sewed the pieces.  The pattern is easy but very confusing.  In fact, I had sewn it wrong so I had to unpick the seams and sew them again.  After 15 minutes more, I had this top:

Much more feminine !

And here is my whole outfit for the fashion show :

This is SO ME !!!  Mismatched, cutsy and with a sixties feel !   I am rather proud of it all.  In fact, I also have a messenger bag to go with it, in the same (pants) fabric than the hat.  I'm also thinking of cutting my long hair.  I have not had it this long in a while and I am looking at a sixties blunt cut to the shoulders (because I like my ponytail), "a-la-Pan-Am".

So with this outfit done, here is what is left to do for the fashion show:

- the prom dress  - La robe de bal
- a little hat for the little girl  - Un petit chapeau pour la jeune fille
- a fascinator for the prom dress   - Un bibi (mini-chapeau) pour la robe de bal

And a green patch dress for moi, the designer.  And of course, I can't forget about my mountain fo grading... ugh...

And I am trying to get my logo digitized so I can embroider it on my clothes (I hate tags !)

I'll post more this week-end.  J'afficherai encore cette fin de semaine.

Peace

Claudia

Mommy and Me !

Well folks, no, I don't have children but for the fashion show, a good teacher friend of mine has agreed to walk for me with her 8 year old daughter.  Since I have a lot of things to do, I chose to give my friend a very colourful dress I made from a pattern (Linda's best dress and top from the marvelous Linda McPhee (whom I am going to meet at the Creativ Festival in Toronto at the end of the month *squeals* !).  So it is a pieced number with, what else,  T-shirts !!!  So I thought it would be fun to make a mini version of it.  I asked my friend for a dress that fits her daughter and drafted the pattern very roughly from it.  On the paper, I traced some lines, reminiscent of my adult dress.  I still had the pile of t-shirts from my last disaster creation so I mimicked the colours with what I had.  However, I don't particularly like "bat-like" sleeves so I made some sleeves.  And a tip for saving time (and why I LOVE to work with already existing garments): put your sleeve pattern on an existing sleeve to get the HEM !!!  Since the top part is very tiny on a girl's dress, I decided not to cut the back into 2 pieces (like the adult version).

So, without further adieu, here are the dresses:

Front version - Doesn't it look like a smaller photocopy ;) ?

Back version.  Obviously, a bit different because of the pattern design...

Can you spot my error on this side ?... (*palm to forehead*)

If I had more time, I would put some kind of embroidery or designs on certain pieces to spruce it up a bit.  I might print some things with potato stamps or something before the fashion show but we'll see.

- It is a bit crooked because I mirrored the back patterns and shouldn't have (I did NOT read the instructions from the original pattern - bad girl !) but other than that, I think it is pretty cute.
- I also topstitched the serged seams on top because it looked warped and did not hang properly - I just used the longest stitch.  Here is a picture of the back of the dress to show the seams:

If you click on the picture, you can see the seamlines on the back part.  You can also see that I had to use the wrong side of the orange because it was brighter.

- The collar part is stiffened with some lining piece I had on hand and I added a decorative stitch, just like mommy's dress.

wrong side (warpy lining...) before ironing...

Here are pictures of the decorative stitches on daughter's dress and on mommy's dress:

I am also working on a messenger bag made with my red cords.  I had to patch the flap (white wavy stitch) and I decided to decorate it with a cute Chestchire cat design (from the Urban Threads Alice in Wonderland design pack).  I made it in Yellow for it to pop.  I am just waiting to get some kind of red strap because I am out of the red cord fabric (ah, the wonderful world of clothes reconstruction).

Isn't this cat too cute !!!

So, you get the picture.  I will post the final result in a few days (when it is finished).

And here is a final picture of me wearing my dress when I met one of my idols: Funny man Stéphane Rousseau:

OMG what a gorgeous man !!!

So it is all for now.  Hope you come back to follow my, albeit slow, progress towards fashion show readiness !!!

Peace !

Claudia
